Paying for LinkedIn or going free

A common question I get from audience members in trainings is, “Should I pay for LinkedIn?” LinkedIn has certainly made it easy for job seekers to do so by offering a discounted membership level. Additionally, I pay for LinkedIn and use the advanced features almost every day. However, my answer isn’t so cut and dry. Many people find enormous benefit to the free version. So here’s my advice: Use the free version until you’re limited by some restricted feature. You may need more Direct Messages, Invitations, or advanced search filters. If you’re bumping up against this wall, then consider jumping into a paid account for the duration of your job search. You can always cancel and go back to the free version after you land a job, when you don’t need to use LinkedIn so much.
